My husband and I went on a Jeep jamboree this past weekend. There were 40+ Jeeps involved. We went to places in Monument Valley that nobody but Navajos are allowed to go without a permit and a guide. The majority of the time we were on back country roads, so our Jeeps were covered with red dust. We ate lunch on top of a mesa with a beautiful view of Monument Valley below us. Getting to the top of the mesa was nice and challenging. We went up several sandy areas where you had to floor the gas pedal, and up and over some very rocky areas, We went down a giant sand hill that was impossible to get back up. One of the mechanics tried it, and failed. We saw so many beautiful sights, such as a donkey standing to the side of the road looking like he was counting each jeep as it went by, a herd of wild horses running across the valley floor, and a ewe and her lamb stopping traffic on the main road up into to Mexican Hat. One of the Navajo Tribal police got out of her truck, and shooed mama and baby off to the side of the road. The Navajos raise cattle, sheep, goats, and horses, and most are free range. We also got to drive through Mystery Valley, which had it's own interesting rock formations, and was beautiful. Our dinner was outside at a picnic area in Monument Valley, where we had Navajo tacos, and spice cake with whipped cream and strawberries.
